Call of Duty (COD) Zombies began in 2008 with COD: World at War. It started out as a hidden bonus mode unlocked after finishing the main story, starting with a map called Nacht Der Untoten. Developed by Jesse Snyder during his free time as the higher-ups at Treyarch were hesitant to give much time or resources to a new mode, this mode focused on gameplay where players took on endless waves of zombies, earning points used to buy new weapons and open doors. Its dark vibe, straightforward mechanics, and replayability quickly drew players in, transforming what was initially just a small added feature into a well-loved and integral part of the COD series.
As the franchise continued with games like COD: Black Ops, Zombies evolved into a more elaborate, story-focused experience. New features like perks, Pack-a-Punch upgrades, and wonder weapons were added, plus intricate Easter eggs and well-written recurring characters. The storyline expanded across various games, introducing elements like time travel, alternate dimensions, and interwoven narratives. Over time, COD Zombies has become a signature cooperative mode with a loyal fanbase, leaving a lasting mark on multiplayer gaming.
